Federal law doesn't require manufacturers or stores to use opening dating, except for infant formula, but some states have their own requirements. If manufacturers choose to use dates, they must indicate the month, the day and a phrase explaining the date:

Most early Treks (1976 through about 1980) were sold as framesets. The components were added by the local bike shop or by the buyer. New components often were used. Components also could be swapped from an existing ride to the new frameset. This makes dating the components an interesting archeological investigation, but one not necessarily related to the date of the bike.

IMPORTANT NOTE: I have not personally verified all of these code keys. Also, closed date coding schemes may change over time. For this reason, the code keys given below may not be correct. Be sure to check a number of containers in a product line to verify that a particular code key will work with the product line you are interested in.
